Electronic Week 2001 is a product of a dream borne out of the desire to see our nation come up from its present abyss of shame and scorn to where we rightfully belong, the summit of dignity and fulfilment. Nigeria has enough physical, human and other resources that can place us in the international hall of fame and progress but the truth is that we are far from that distinguished position. An average student has grown up to know a nation that we can not be proud of. Being identified as a Nigerian has almost become a necessary stigma because after many years of existence (under and above colonisation), we have not arrived at the place meet for us.

This year’s Electronic Week was set up to stir in our hearts the desire to help build a nation that we can all boldly call our fatherland. The theme has been chosen to guide us in considering the tools available today in the field of technology, and then see how we can deploy such to enhance national growth and also keep us from the looming digital divide. From Electrical Power Generation to Information Technology and Society involvement, we hope to weave a complete basket of truth that can liberate us from the imminent danger that lies ahead of the present structure, operations and system that we have in our nation.

The statement by Isaac Newton becomes relevant in this light. We can not afford to continue to pretend that we are the giant of Africa, we have to either resolve to remain in this state or choose to change. Something called reformation must happen to our nation and it begins with everyone present here, or if not present, has the kind of dream that burns in our system. I personally believe that in this auditorium today, (and of course in the few days ahead), are the instruments of change, the generation that will choose to take the bull by the horns and declare, through their actions and attitude, that a New Nigeria has been born.

Through the various activities of this event, I am sure that the catalyst required for interest, involvement and desire for The Future of Nigeria will be discovered. We remain eternally grateful to the eminent men and women who have honoured our invitaion and would be glad to inform them that they have not only agreed to speak at the EEESS’s Electronic Week 2001 but they have sown a seed in the soil of this nation that would germinate and produce trees that have enough resouces to influence The Future of Nigeria. I am glad to announce to you that the Future of Nigeria begins today. Welcome to Electronic Week 2001.
